The Hot Flash Club Chills Out: A Novel

The Hot Flash Club Chills Out: A Novel Review

Since opening up their day spa, The Haven, the wonderful women of the Hot Flash Club have been busy indulging the beleaguered, nerve-frazzled throngs. Now, in Nancy Thayer’s hilarious new Hot Flash novel, it’s the friends’ turn to grab some soothing, and much-deserved R&R.

When a long-time Haven client asks the gals to housesit her Nantucket hideaway for the summer, they’re beyond thrilled; the cozy island enclave is the perfect place to shop, swim, chill, and plan Marilyn’s upcoming wedding to Ian, her Scottish fiancĂ©. And Marilyn desperately needs the break, since Ian’s grown son has crashed at the couple’s place with no departure date in sight.

Soon after they arrive, the other hot flashers surrender to their own summer flings: Shirley entertains a steamy dalliance with a scruffy, sexy local fisherman that could lead to something deeper; Faye finds her dream house, but restoring it could be a costly nightmare; craft-maven Polly is enthralled by the island’s bounty, from shell art to lightship baskets; and even hardboiled Alice swoons with romantic adventure–or is it seasickness?

But this lovefest among the sand and ocean breezes is not without its consequences. Each woman must determine for herself what she is willing to give up in order to hold onto what she has found–and all of them fear that Shirley is on the brink of making a huge mistake, one that threatens their harmony and their business. But these concerns may be eclipsed by the mystery surrounding the disappearance of family heirlooms at the house where they are staying, and rumors that the place harbors spirits other than Grey Goose and Tanqueray.

Nancy Thayer continues her hugely successful Hot Flash series with this wickedly funny, delightfully bawdy tale. These irresistible women spring to life–along with their passions, their sorrows, their joys, and, most importantly, their friendship. So pack your bags and join these fabulous five for a season of fun, sun, love, sex, and estrogen therapy.

Flash Point: Holding Out for a Hero, Book 3

Flash Point: Holding Out for a Hero, Book 3 Review

One taste of her lips, and friendship is off the menu.

Holding Out for a Hero, Book 3

Kate has always been everybody’s friend and the de-facto little sister to the Wyatt brothers. But her feelings for Todd Wyatt, the town’s hottest firefighter, run far beyond the sibling variety. Not that he’s ever noticed.

After years of nursing her crush, Kate decides it’s time to take action. Except she has one awkward little secret: she’s still a virgin. She hopes she can seduce Todd without him realizing just how inexperienced she is.

In Todd’s mind, Kate’s the sweet girl he teases and hits up for free cupcakes. One surprise kiss over the summer, though, and suddenly she’s jumped from the platonic side of his brain to the want-her-in-my-bed side. Even though the last thing he wants is to lose her friendship, his resistance to her determined seduction is slipping. Fast.

When malicious attacks on her bakery escalate, it soon becomes clear that for all Kate’s friends, she’s made at least one big enemy. And if they don’t figure it out soon, things could take a deadly turn.

Warning: A sexy firefighter. A virgin bakery owner. A dollop of role playing, kinky costumes, friends becoming lovers, and a little danger along the way.

Rigged

Rigged Review

5.0 out of 5 stars first 5 star review for an indie goes to..., 2 Jan 2012
By M. White "Obyod Press" (UK) (REAL NAME)
This review is from: Rigged (Kindle Edition)

"A straight-out actioner, 'Rigged' makes no pretensions towards high art and is the better for it. I may have to keep my eye on Flash Rex - his unapologetic, b***s to the wall narrative style is right up my street and so refreshing amidst all this worthy fare. Why don't people write like this any more?

When two heavies burst in on Tommy in act 1, it becomes apparent we're in for a bumpy ride. And a fun one; the plot develops swiftly in a haze of guns, goons and girls. I was carried along easily and got some genuine out-loud laughs (a rarity in Kindle Land), particularly from the crackling dialogue. The length is just right and the formatting and production are spot on. Keep it up FR."

...

Tommy is one lucky bastard!

He realized the American Dream! He holds a winning lottery ticket for a million jackpot in his hand.

He sure is lucky...

for about thirty seconds...

until some goon kicks his door in!

Tommy is one unlucky bastard!

At least he'll get some cardio in!

Don't worry he's got a gun, a stripper (exotic dancer!) and a brother who's a cop!

Besides, what (more) can go wrong?

A six thousand word cautionary tale by Flash Rex, the author of Megalodon Lives and I Ape.

An excerpt:

He wiped his sweaty palms on his jeans and sat back on the love seat. Then forward again. The lottery ticket sat on the stained coffee table.
He stood up and peeked out the window through the dented plastic slats in the blinds. Nothing.
He picked up the remote and turned up the volume. "Here are tonight's winning lottery numbers."
He dropped the remote on the couch and grabbed the ticket. His hands shook. As expected, the numbers matched the ones the lady read off on the TV.
"Holy shit, it worked."
He stuffed the ticket into his pocket. His go bag was by the door. He picked up one of the straps and squinted as he took a final look through the peep hole.
He couldn't see anything. It was black.
Then the door crashed in on him.

Flash Crash

Flash Crash Review

In 2020, Europe is a dangerous place. The oil shock of 2013 has relegated most citizens in the Hub to a marginal existence, surviving on food handouts. In the ruins of a Costa Blanca seaside resort, day trader Eli supplements his earnings by buying and selling anything he can get his hands on. Meanwhile in London, Meera, the ambitious CEO of an Indian software company, has arrived to pitch for a mysterious contract offered by a consortium of Europe's wealthiest banks. Staying at the same hotel is Fern, an Australian visiting Europe for the last time before she makes a fresh start. Meera's missed date with her ex-boyfriend, a hit-and-run in North London and a massive explosion in the Spanish mountains set off a series of events that will change the world for ever, triggered by a meltdown in the world financial system unless Eli, Meera and Fern can race against the clock to reveal the truth.

If you have been watching the recent news about the world's financial system and wondered 'What if...?", then this book is for you.

Excerpt:

By the time the train reached Baker Street, they were alone. It was like being on a ghost train, thought Fern, as they rattled through empty station after empty station, the train spasmodically jerking to a stop and the lights guttering as the power supply to the track cut in and out.

'How far does it go?' she asked.

'Still goes to the end of the line,' said Martin. 'If there's trouble in West City, then it stops at Shepherds Bush, but otherwise it'll go to Hammersmith and come back again.'

'Trouble?'

'Riots. The police tend to leave the place alone, but every so often they send the army in to round up the troublemakers and it all kicks off. Sometimes people will block the train track as a protest, or else they'll set fire to things and the smoke will be too thick for the trains to run.

'There's always a rumour that they're going to shorten the line and forget about the western extension, but it's easier for them to turn the trains around at Hammersmith. Not that anything will be running in a couple of weeks, anyway.'

'You are sure you've got this right, aren't you?' asked Fern suddenly. 'It's just started hitting home to me what all this means. No trains, no one going to work any more, nothing in the shops. I mean, it's been bad for a while now, but people know they're not going to starve with the soup kitchens there. But what happens when that's not even an option?'

Martin shrugged, lurching to the side as the train took a bend too sharply.

'It's hard to say. It depends on how many politicians are in on it. If there's a critical mass of government ministers who have been left on the outside, they may be tempted to try and run some kind of shadow administration for a while. But it could get bad within days, once the supply chains break down. That's when panic sets in.

'There used to be this old saying that England was only two meals away from revolution. That's why they've been making such an effort to keep everyone fed, even when people couldn't pay for it.'

'What are you going to do?' he asked suddenly. 'I wouldn't have blamed you if you'd gone home, you know. Neither would Meera. It's not like any of us are pretending we can save the world. People are going to die whatever happens.'

'Don't know,' said Fern. 'Take my chances, I suppose. I'll get back to Australia eventually. Not that there's much there for me any more. Might as well make myself useful here while there's stuff to do.'

'We're here,' said Martin, as the train pulled up at a deserted station on the other side of the canal.

The stairs were rotten and half the station sign was missing. Fern read 'Westbourne' and racked her brain to think what the other half of the name had been. Park? Water? Grove? She gave up. The train rattled away, far into the distance and they were alone, with just their footsteps echoing in the dark ticket hall.
