Seeking to address the various challenges of off-camera lighting, professional photographers and advanced amateurs alike will find a range of confidence-building instruction, beginning with basic how’s and why’s of lighting for creative effect, the types of equipment available and instruction about their proper use, clear definitions of various technical concepts such as managing shutter speed and controlling flash exposure, using ambient light as well as natural sunlight during a shoot, and incorporating off-camera flash into a portrait session. Concluding this lesson plan is a look at five different real-life photo sessions, each employing a different flash technique. Here, photographers get a deeper understanding of each concept put into practice, marrying the elements of lighting with the natural elements presented by the shoot.

Flash Gold (a steampunk novella set in the Yukon) (The Flash Gold Chronicles)

Flash Gold (a steampunk novella set in the Yukon) (The Flash Gold Chronicles) Review

Eighteen-year-old Kali McAlister enters her steam-powered "dogless sled" in a race, intending to win the thousand-dollar prize and escape remote Moose Hollow forever. The problem? Fortune seekers and airship pirates are after her for the secret to flash gold, her late father's alchemical masterpiece.

With her modified rifle and a pocketful of home-made smoke bombs, Kali wouldn't normally hide from a confrontation, but taking on a whole airship single-handedly is a daunting task. Unfortunately, the other racers won't assist her--they're too busy scheming ways to sabotage her unorthodox sled.

When a sword-slinging stranger shows up, wanting to hire on as her protector, she's sure he has ulterior motives, but he's the only one interested in helping her. The question is...why?

An 18,000-word (80 page) novella

Definitive Flash Gordon and Jungle Jim Volume 1

Definitive Flash Gordon and Jungle Jim Volume 1 Review

IDW''s Library of American Comics is producing The Definitive Flash Gordon & Jungle Jim as part of the Ultimate Alex Raymond Collection. Edited by Eisner Award-winner Dean Mullaney, The Definitive Flash Gordon & Jungle Jim will present every Sunday by Raymond from both classic strips together for the first time, in the oversized 12" x 16" champagne edition format. Created by Raymond in 1934, Flash Gordon is arguably the most famous science fiction comic strip of all time. It follows the adventures of the title character and his companions, Dale Arden and Dr. Zarkov, as they leave Earth to discover the source of meteors that are threatening the planet, and get waylaid on the planet Mongo, where they battle the evil Ming the Merciless. The three Earthlings encounter one strange race after another, from the water-breathing Shark-Men of the Undersea Kingdom, the winged Hawkmen, and the ferocious Tusk-Men. All the while, Flash finds himself in the arms of one beautiful woman after another - much to Dale Arden''s chagrin. Jungle Jim was created as a strip topper for Flash Gordon, and followed the life of Jim Bradley, who fought pirates, slave traders, and assorted villains in the exotic Southeast Asia of the 1930s. This neglected Raymond classic also features Jim''s native cohort Kolu and femme fatale Lille DeVrille.

Flash of Light

Flash of Light Review

Kip Chanin can find herself in trouble faster than the shutter speed of a good camera and that’s usually the reason. Photography is how Kip looks at the world. It's how she tells the story of life through the photos she takes that gets people talking and makes them furious.

In one day, Kip takes a portrait of her Alex Milne’s brother, Gabe, overdosing, gets him to the hospital in time and is fired by her agent. By the end of the week, everyone in Europe knows she’s the idiot photographer who took pictures of her “lover” while he was shooting up. That kind of publicity does not go over well with Alex. But life moves too fast to wonder for long if she’ll be forgiven—for anything. Kip has an 80 year old murder to solve, portraits to take of scruffy rock stars and a friendship to create with a shy jazz singer. All while trying to manage Alex who is 6,000 miles away in serial snowstorms with his sizzling hot co-star throwing herself at him.

When Alex finally arrives back in Los Angeles, they go out into the Mojave Desert where Kip announces they’re not coming home until the issues between them are solved. At an inn, with one room with one bed left, the question of what happens next is obvious. The answer is more complicated than Kip expects.

The past has surprising ways of sneaking up on people and Kip finds ways to put history behind her and Alex. But not always.

The sequel to Flash. Mature themes. Sexual situations but nothing graphic.
PG-13 +
